What should I draw?

The best thing to do if you want to learn to draw is to start by sketching simple objects.  Practice seeing and sketching with basic shapes then gradually work your way to more complicated subjects.   Fruit and vegetables are time-honored still life components that artists have used for centuries.  I like to start with them in my drawing classes.   But really, anything can be used.  I’ll bet you have all kinds of things nearby – perhaps a cup and saucer, shoes, scissors, kitchen utensils, tools, sunglasses.   If you can see it, you can draw it.

Today, I’m going to do draw a bowl of strawberries.  Yum!   I start by looking at the overall shape, then define the bowl and fit the berries within it.  I look at the relationship of one berry to the next and draw their shapes until I have them all in the bowl.  Then I add the stems and  the details of the bowl.   For this drawing I used a 6B pencil. Take a look:

The more you draw, the easier it will become.  Keep practicing!
